Sound Effect Analysis – Drive
1)
The purpose of diegetic sound
is to help set and creative the scene with tension and also to establish the
main point in the scene, for example in the sequence you can hear the police
radio talks about the heist that is happening and how close they are to your
location, which makes you feel anxious, just incase they get caught. The extra
little sounds helps to create the atmosphere like the door sensor beeping helps
toward the tension, but the sound of running commentary coming from the
basketball games give a sense of relaxation which you can tell that the driver
is quite relaxed. The purpose is to
entertain and emphasis the genre which is crime thriller.
2)
The main character is sitting in
his car as he is the getaway driver for two criminals who are about to do an
armed robbery. The main character (Ryan Gosling) who pulls up at the scene were
the two robbers are waiting for him so they can commit the robbery and jump in
his car, you then see them run over to the gate, cut the chains and then shoot
the lock of the back door. The shot gun sounds lets the audience see how
serious they are about with what they are doing and it has quite a big impact
as when the shot gun shoes off there isn’t much back ground sounds like common traffic
sounds or any other sounds that are out the car, this is why the bang of the
shotgun is so loud because it goes from just having diegetic internal sounds to
an external bang. The loud bang makes you feel anxious for them hoping they
will make is out in time. But they’ll have to be quick because Ryan has a rule
which is a 5 minute window were if they are not back with-in 5 minutes then he
will drive off and leave them.
After you hear the gunshots,
Ryan turns the police radio up, this is good piece of diegetic sounds that help
create tension because you hear the police say what kind of car Ryan is in and
also the location of the car. During the point were you can hear the police
radio and the criminals are still in the shop you can hear a various different
amount of sounds which give you mixed feeling in the scene as you can hear the
basketball commentary, the shop alarm and the clock ticking which is very valuable
in the scene as it the main diegetic tension builder because it is louder then
it usually be , and also the non-diegetic sound in the background which is fast
constant beats then suddenly you hear the back door of the shop swing open and
the criminal comes running out and jumps in the back and you can hear him
breath heavily as if he is scared or nervous which makes you feel a bit on the
edge of your seat.
